Medical Technology Touches a “Brave New World”

Who would’ve thought it would be possible that the world of “The Matrix” would actually be a real event? Machines growing humans? Hopefully not, but in this day and age of technology, you better believe we come remarkably close to that. It’s a “brave new world,” as entitled by the infamous Aldous Huxley book, and Lord knows there’s a craze out there of discovery. If you’ve read the science fiction novel, you’d know about the artificial womb.

Guess what–we might be close to that technology bringing it to a reality. Welcome, “The Matrix.” The ‘artificial womb’ is exactly that–a real womb designed exactly how a real uterus inside a woman would be. It’s typically filled with room-temperature amniotic fluid with an umbilical attachment outside the chamber leading to pumps designed to deliver all the essential nutrients during pregnancy and also handle waste. Sterile women no longer have limited options in having children. Simply take a husband’s sperm, artificially inseminate a frozen ovum, implant in an artificial womb, and viola! You’ll have a baby grown practically naturally.

There is no telling when this technology will be perfected, but one thing’s for sure: there are no issues to contend with, not like with stem cell research. It’s the simple process of reproduction done at an automatic level, designed to provide those unable to reproduce the gift of reproduction. You honestly can’t say no to that gift, especially if it’s a gift you really want–or even need. The ability to give life is a truly amazing thing.
