Treating Diabetes through Contacts

Did you know that science is working on new ways for you to treat diabetes? If you are a diabetic, or have a loved one suffering from this condition, you may already know the pain the disease causes. Each day, and sometimes more than one time per day, those with diabetes need to test blood sugar levels to determine if they need to make adjustments based on their health. These needle pokes and testing steps can be challenging at best. However, science is making it easier than ever to manage this condition.

One of the ways it is doing so is through the use of nanocomposite contact lenses. These lenses look and feel the same way that traditional contact lenses work for those who have difficulties seeing. However, the difference is that these contacts contain nanoparticles. This is added directly to the makeup of the contact lens. These lenses, called hydrogel lenses, react with the glucose molecules that are present within a human’s tears. When the reaction occurs, it changes the eye color of the person.

When there are changes in the color of the eye, this indicates that there is a change in the glucose levels within the body. This gives diabetes an easy way to monitor for changes in blood sugar levels without having to actually prick a finger to do so. Now, all they need to do is to look into the mirror to know what is happening within their body. If you notice a change in the eye color, this will indicate what you need to do to better manage your glucose levels. It provides the same basic information that pricking you finger would provide.

This type of technology is in the works and is something that may be available to you in coming years. Take into consideration how much this type of movement would improve your quality of life and, overall, limit the pain that you struggle with as a diabetic. For some, especially those who avoid the blood testing, this makes the process easier to do and more likely that you will do it.
